About this site

I have launched Achieving Sustainability to fill a much needed space as a “Boundary Blog1)(Guston 2001) among others have described “Boundary Organizations” as organizations which attempt to span the boundaries between science and society, particularly in order to focus on solving some problem or set of problems.” for Sustainability. This Boundary Blog is a space where science and the average citizen can meet to discuss how our societies can achieve Sustainability. The topics will be wide ranging and diverse as is the field of Sustainability but all discussions will have several key aspects:

  • Analysis of how said development/book/discovery/idea/etc. can/may/will/won’t contribute to our ability as a human species to achieve Sustainability
  • Be based on the most rigorous science available2)No promises to be able to keep track of it all, please chime in with all that I miss. with some presumption that wide consensuses do not need to be re-argued (e.g. human-caused climate change).
  • Written in an accessible style which promotes open and inclusive discussions
  • Take a multi-cultural, multi-dimensional and multi-perspective view of desired futures and what achieving Sustainability means
  • This blog is not an academic journal/discussion board nor will we have instructions for DIY3)Do-It-Yourself composting toilets and how to select phosphate free dish soaps though we may of course touch on such themes in our journey together

Most of all this blog is about fostering a global discussion about how we can apply the best science to create the societies that we dream about within our planet’s limited capacity…in other words Achieving Sustainability.
